You have to love wireless!
Here I am sitting in the Chek Inn in Lamar. A nice quiet little spot in the heart of downtown Lamar. That’s sort of a joke. Lamar has a tiny downtown. I asked for a quiet room, since I need all the sleep I can get. My wonderful friend Walter decided he wanted me to have a room in town, but I have to say him being generous really is more than nice. He has such a big heart. I love you Walter. Thank you so much for what you do for me. He pitched in for the room.
I get so damn excited about going to a ranch to do photography, that I seriously don’t think I slept one minute last night. I dragged my buttocks out of bed at 4 and took a quick shower. I got out the door and one the road by 4:20 or so.
I wanted to get to the ranch early and get in the gather part of the day. Wasn’t going to happen though. I didn’t estimate my time correctly getting there and was about an hour late. Crap!
Getting to this place……I have to give Kelly credit for giving me detailed directions. It isn’t an easy ranch to find. I arrived not knowiing if I would know one person. I saw some familiar faces, which is always welcoming, even if they didn’t remember me. There were several people attening and lots of little kids running around having fun.
Denver had rain in the forecast. I’m not sure what it did up there though. Lamar was beautiful. I was driving in overcast skies getting there and then once I got there it seemed like it was really nice and warm.
Most of the guys working were younger than me. I saw Art who is quite the charcter. I love this guy. I have to post a photo of him that depicts his true character.

Art eating a calf nut...Yuck
This is the third one I got photos of. Art is quite the character. We get along well. He is always joking around and entertaining the crowd. Art is 100% cowboy. He has a foreign exchange student living with him. That kid will never be the same. He is from Paris, France and here he was out there with the best of them. He looked like he knew what he was doing too. That was his third branding yesterday.
I feel like I have a perma smile whenever I am around this work. I can’t express in writing what this work does to me and for me. I could never get sick of it. Never!
I have to say the people there were amazing. Very nice people. Lots of young boys and older folks. What a crew too. I’m not sure how many head they did yesterday, but I heard one figure of 600. I missed that first gather, and the second one happened so quick that I didn’t get the ATV all set up. Dang! That is my favorite part of the whole day, is the gather part.
I have to also add a photo of this young guy who had the most unusual eye color. The photo does NOT do him justice, as far as color, but they were almost like turquoise.
Here is the photo of him.

Turquoise Cowboy
I had the best of times. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy doing what I do. My passion grows only stronger every chance I get to work around ranches and cattle.
It’s Sunday now and I just got home a bit ago. I am soooooooooooo wiped out. I give it my all when I work. I work when everyone takes breaks. I work when everyone is eating. I had a few crackers and a snickers for lunch and some Gatorade to quench my thirst.
I met so many new people. I loved how they are so nice to me. This was a branding that had more people than I’m use to.
Branding at the Ponderosa
I wanted to show a photo of how busy it was. There are a total of six branding “stations”. In this photo you can see 2 calves being worked on in the foreground. The guy in the red shirt takes care of the head on the 2 front feet. The guy in the back has a tough job too. He has to control the kicking hind legs, which can do major damage, and he makes sure the calf won’t be getting up during castration and branding. It can be a hell of a job. If you look close at the photo you can see the lady in the white/blue plaid shirt, next to the cowboy at the calves head in the red shirt. She is giving vaccinations. Women mostly do this job. There is one more girl next to the second calf down. She has chinks on (a style of chaps) on. She also does vaccinations. At the second calf there is a guy bending over next to her. He is going to do the castration. For a bull there are at least up to 7 people to get the bull to a steer. You have the roper, who ropes the calf and drags them to the branding area. The castrater guy/or girl if it was my daughter, does his thing and hands the nuts to someone else to take care of. The vaccination lady does her thing. The flankers do their job, and 2 guys brand at the same time. There is also a person who will tag ears. The tags make sure that the babies match up with their right momma. They also provide a way for the rancher to identify the cow for several reasons. You would think the calf being worked on is the most important animal in the world. It’s quick and to the point, done in a couple of minutes. I think my daughter castrates better than some men for sure.
Now for the BEST news!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s sort of a long story.
Now it’s Monday morning. I don’t think I have written a 3 day post before. On Sunday morning though, I had heard I was going to watch some “A. I’n” (Artificial Insemination) Not my favorite thing to watch. Actually it’s the closest I’ve come to hurling. I haven’t seen any women do A. I., but one the other hand it seems like the thing a guy would LOVE! I know one cowboy who had a sort of love for his calves. He would say ” I made those calves” Ewww! Just the thought in my mind was wrong. I know what he meant.
So anyway, the A.I’n didn’t happen, so Kelly and I went and checked on some mommas and babies. That was fun. While we were doing that Shelia and her sone Tell. They had to seperate some cattle in pens, while we were out doing our thing. We all met up a bit later and Sheila got in the truck with Kelly and I. They decided to give me some sort of little tour. First we went and checked to see if one of Kelly’s friend was around. I guess his friend trains cutting horses and has had lots of success. We got there and drove around his property to look for him. His car wasn’t there but when we got back around to the front of the house, this young man comes walking out. He told us the best story. He was extremely cute! Sheila noticed a shiner he had below his left eye. He just woke up to after a long night. His story was great! Here’s a photo of Levi.

One Punch Levi
His shiner is a bit tough to see here while he’s smiling. Here is the story as I remember it.
He and Tell (Sheila and Kellys son) went out drinking to the Opal Bar. I haven’t been to that bar. As they were there some guy who knows Tell, but thought he was a different person came up and clocked him. I don’t know if he got hurt. I didn’t see any injuries on him though. Remember, Levi is telling us this story. I might have some of the details wrong. It could be two bars involved.
After Tell got punched Levi was talking to a large woman. I don’t know if he knew her already. She was there with her 2 guy friends. I guess Levi didn’t want to talk to her anymore or something. I can’t remember the reason she hit him really hard upside his head. This girls friends thought that it was Levi who had hit her or started some ruckus. They came over to Levi and asked him if that is what happened and got all in Levi’s face about it. Levi told him to back down or he was going to punch the guy. The guy didn’t back down and the other guy came over too. He hit the one first and knocked him out and the second guy comes over and he knocks him out too. The one line I loved was that he was amazed that the owner of the bar, and he named who he was let him fight in the bar. I started laughing. Then it just got better. The guy who had punched tell was someone they both knew and I believed liked. Levi went up to him and asked him if he punched Levi. The kid said yes and Levi told him “I suggest that if you don’t want me to knock the shit out of you for punching my friend Tell, you go over and punch (this other kid Tell and Levi don’t like) that guy and make it good”. The boy shrugged his shoulders and took a deep breath and walked over and cold cocked the guy.
He got word later that the boys wanted to fight him again outside the “Cow Palace” Yes, that’s right the Cow Palace!!! It’s a hotel/bar and restaurant. I have my own good story about that place, but I won’t go into it now.
So, Levi goes down to the Cow Palace and knocks both them out cold again.
That’s the end of that story. You might have had to be there, but for me….I was getting a kick out of hearing this strapping young man could do some heavy damage and his humor in doing so was so dang funny. This was the first part to a wonderful day.
Whenever I am around ranchers I always talk about how single I am and how much I want to marry a gret guy who ranches. Sheila started thinking and right away came up with this one gentleman who had great qualities. He is super nice, really good looking, a GREAT cook and lives, where else, on a ranch! Sweet!!!!!
Kelly had nice things to say about him as well. I love how the women are looking out for me. When I told the owner of the Ponderosa I was single, he said well you have about 8 guys you could pick from today. I looked at him and said, “Sure, but I think they all might be in their 20’s still”. He turned to me and replied, “Oh hell, that’s alright”. Not for me it isn’t, but they are nice to look at.
While Kelly and Sheila were talking this guy up that they thought would be good, Sheila said that maybe we should go over there so I could meet him. Wouldn’t you know, he lives a few miles away from the ER doctor. He lives out by Hasty. Wouldn’t you know!
Well, the two of them talked and talked about him. I was already in lust, just hearing how great he is.Kelly had to head back to the house and get ready to go feed at the feed lot, or something like that. He dropped Shelia and myself off at the house and got this huge feeder thing and went off to go feed. Kelly is so cute. While he was out Sheila and I had some tea. The phone rang and it’s Ty. Yes, my dream came true. I cowboy named Ty! I didn’t know it was him though. Sheila was just chatting away talking about how “we” were sitting around drinking tea. I was wondering who would know about me.
It was “him”!!! Kelly had called Ty to tell him, whatever he wanted to tell him. Knowing Kelly it was a lie. He more than likely told him I was some stripper or something. I guess Ty liked what he heard because he called right away. Nice. : )
He was trying to figure out when we all could meet. He had some guy coming over to look at some cattle. Cattle???? He’s a rancher??? Yes, sort of. I guess he was disabled in some way when serving out great country. He is on disability, which keeps him involved on some level.
Sheila had planned lunch with her two boys and Kelly. I wasn’t in the plan then.
Kelly came back from feeding and we pretty much loaded up in the truck and drive over to Ty’s place. We drove toward Hasty. We turn and head down a little dirt road. It crosses over the Arkansas River and turns eventually into his family homestead. It’s beautiful! An old rock beet house barely stands upright at the entrance. The driveway turns toward his home. Big trees, green grass, and a beautiful home.
There he was! WOW! Good looking big strapping cowboy. He looks like a gorgeous football player. Mmm! Big built, not fat. Maybe 6 feet tall. Short hair…..maybe a buzz that is growing out?? Holy crap! He starts in on the whole cooking thing, and I about had to cross my legs. Geez! A man that can cook does more for me than he could imagine. It’s the straight line aphrodisiac for me. It works too. Why? I don’t know. I can’t explain. But it does work!
He asked me a few questions. I can’t even remember since I was so shy. He handed everyone a beer, including me. I have not blogged about this I think, but I am soooo allergic to beer. Hospital visit. Hops and me don’t mix!
Sheila asked him to come to lunch with us. He had to show these cattle and then he would come into town and eat lunch. Cool! I would get to see him again. Nice!
We went to a little Mexican restaurant in Lamar. Levi, Tell, Will, Kelly, Shelia, myself, and Kelly took a big table and saved a spot for Ty, next to me. While we were eating in walks Festis. I don’t know his real name, but that’s what Kelly calls him. He came and sat next to me. Ty didn’t come in until we were all finished with our lunch. We all chatted. He seemed interested, but I can’t read men to well sometimes.
He was asking if I would be in town for the evening. GOD! I was, I was going to be in town!!!!!! He asked when I would be back up. I will be there on Friday and Saturday. I might go down on Thursday night. I can’t afford it by all means, but this is more important than money to me. Not to hang with Ty, but my photography work is a serious but fun job for me.
After lunch we chatted for a brief moment. He wanted to see if I was going to be at this 3 day branding down on a big ranch outside of Pueblo. It’s a camping deal. Yikes! Food will be an issue, I don’t like that feeling.
It might work out well for Frankie. I love when I can look like I did, and a guy still seems interested. I LOVE IT!!!!!! I had barely had 6 hours of sleep in 2 nights. I was so tired! My hair was in pig tails, I had no makeup on, a major sunburn that Shelby says, ” looks ridiculous”. Mostly my nose. Nice! Oh well, he still seemed like I might have a chance. I have to say I’m totally smitten. Time will tell. I wish he had my phone number, but I guess I will be seeing him on Friday. I hope so anyway.
Friday and Saturday night I get to stay on a beautiful ranch on a large lake or a some lake nearby. I get my own little cabin too. I heard it’s super nice. The rancher that offered his place is a real big, totally nice guy. he was very sweet to offer that. I met him on Saturday at the Ponderosa. His name is John. Saturday, Kelly is having his branding. I’m not sure if Ty will be able to be at these, but at least he is aware I’ll be in town.
Can you believe how long this blog was. A 3 day blog.
